Interactive Whiteboards
Interactive whiteboards are appearing in an increasing number of schools, colleges and corporate training rooms.
An interactive whiteboard is a combination of three pieces of equipment linked together:
- A computer - Mac or PC
- A digital projector
- A touch-sensitive screen - the interactive whiteboard
This combination of technologies turns the interactive whiteboard into a very large computer screen. With a pointer, or even a finger, the user can write on the board or control computer programs. It is ideal for whole-class teaching as it removes the need to have large groups huddled around a single computer screen.
Combining the simplicity of a whiteboard with the power of a computer, the SMART Board interactive whiteboard engages students and audiences around the world.
Interactive whiteboards are available in two forms: front projection and rear projection.
In front projection interactive whiteboards, the projector sits in front of the whiteboard and projects the computer image on
the whiteboard. The projector can sit on the table or mount on the ceiling. They come with either a wall mount bracket, desktop
stand or floor stand on wheels. Some manufacturers also provide an option to raise and lower the display to accommodate users
of different heights.
Rear projection interactive white boards apply the same principles as their front projection counterparts with one
fundamental difference: the projector, with an extremely short-throw lens, is mounted behind the whiteboard, and using a
complex system of mirrors projects an image on to a screen made of a special transmissive material. Rear projection white
boards can save space and reduce installation costs. Many incorporate cabinet space for DVD players and feature connectivity
for laptops.
